The dump hikes are a great opportunity for scouts to put their orienteering skills to the test. Two adult leaders go with the scouts as they attempt to work together to find their way back to camp. The scouts are given a map and often some kind of scavenger hunt to complete on the way back. The hike takes most of the day, as the leaders are only there to provide safety and not guidance. This is a great chance for older scouts to demonstrate the skills a scout need to the younger scouts, and helps everyone involved with personal dependence, orienteering, and troop unity.
