On Saturday October 22nd 2011, scouts from Troop 39, their leaders and parents participated in an event to kick off our year-long celebration of troop 39′s centenary.

The event consisted of a service project, a fun afternoon of exploration on campus, a pig picking and a visit from two special guests – Lord Baden-Powell and Mr Jim Mackorell.

In this video, the first of a series, Mr Mackorell discusses the uniformed troop.

Come back soon for more videos of Mr Mackorell’s memories.

    Dear Mr. Tomkins,

Thanks so much for including me on the electronic mailing list for the latest information/video about Troop 39.

I joined 39 in the fall of 1940 at the age of 12 and later served as Scribe for at least two years.  I remember the merger of Troop 9 with 39 and the new name Joseph Hyde Pratt Troop, which we adopted for a time.  My brother Ed(ward), who lives west of Chapel Hill, was also a member and advanced into the ranks of the Explorers.  He tells me that in recent years he’s rendered occasional service to the Troop.

Best wishesd and keep up the good work

       Ben(ny) Johnson
