The scouts traveled to the Orange County EMS Communications Center in Hillsborough, NC for an important emergency services training drill.   To make these drills realistic, the scouts were made up with Moulage, special make up which simulates injuries – some of it pretty nasty looking!

Earlier this year, fourteen of our scouts earned the FIrst Aid Merit Badge after attending a workshop run by Orange County EMS professionals and Troop 39 was very happy to return the favour and help train the Emergency Services with their own training.

The emergency responders were required to triage, transport and treat the injured, but apparently it didn’t work out quite as planned but valuable lessons were learned and a huge amount of fun was had!

At the Court of Honor on Wednesday 17th February, Troop 39 announced that it is offering the opportunity for Troop 39’s youth members to earn the highly prestigious Congressional Award, America’s Award for Youth.

This is an exciting award that makes outstanding Eagle Scouts stand out further.

Scouts participated in the service with our SPL reading from the Scriptures and our Chaplain’s Aide leading Troop 39 with the Scout Litany.

Scouts also pitched camp on the church lawn and the Troop held a reception between services allowing the congregation to enjoy refreshments and talk to the troop members about their work in the troop. A lunch of eastern Barbecue and trimmings was served with proceeds going to the troop members who are going on their British High Adventure trip in the summer.

We have two events that follow hot on the heels of this Wednesday’s Troop night that we’d like to share with you.  Details for both events are in the attached PDF.  Please discuss these with your scout(s) as we will be collecting names of those planning to attend each of these events at this coming troop night.

On Saturday 9th January we will be holding a First Aid Merit Badge event where scout will be able to earn the Eagle-required First AID MB and the first aid requirements for rank advancement.

On Sunday 17th January, we’ll be having a scouting skills workshop where scouts can work on many requirements for Tenderfoot, 2nd class and first class ranks.  This will be the only opportunity to complete many requirements for advancement before the next Court of Honour.

Boy-led troop: Troop Guides are expected to attend the scouting skills workshop and are welcome to attend 1st Aid. Other older scouts who want to lead the development of the skills of the newer scouts of the troop will also be welcome to attend either event – there will be the opportunity for Star Scouts to earn Life Scout Requirement 6.

Note that the requirement numbers refer to the new centennial handbook.  Details of the changes in the new handbook and transition are on the troop website.

Over 25 Scouts from Troop 39 assisting the University of North Carolina with their Winter Commencement today.  This Troop and UNC tradition dates back to at least 1967 or 42 years.

Scouts handed out programs to graduating classmen and their proud friends and families attending the ceremony at the Dean E Smith Center on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Mike Byerley, District Executive, Chris FitzSimons and Sammy Rape

It’s a fabulous honor for a Scout troop when one of it’s leaders wins a district Scouting award but on the evening of December 7th 2009, leaders from Troop 39 won both the Orange District Assistant Scout Master of the Year Award and the Orange District Scout Master of the Year Award, sweeping the Scoutmaster honors at the 2009 Orange District Awards ceremony.

Speaking after the presentation, Scout Master Sammy Rape was heard asking for a saw so he can divide the award up into pieces and give a chunk to each of the six Assistant Scout Masters of Troop 39.

Chris FitzSimons was described as the best Assistant Scoutmaster I have ever had the privilege of working with and the consummate leader by Sammy.  Chris is very committed,  attending Scout roundtable every month and continually invests in his own skills and training so as to benefit the scouts of his troop, recently earning his wood badge.

Congratulations to both Sammy and Chris on your awards and thank you both for your outstanding contributions and commitment to the troop and the youth of Chapel Hill.

First there are the photos from our December outing to Triangle Rock Club in Morrisville.

Sammy also provided some pictures from the 2008-2009 scouting year.   The scouts clearly had some British High Adventure in July 2008.

Also added were photos of the trip to Busch Gardens in May 2009.
